MARRAKECH – (Casablanca and Rabat Tour) – CASABLANCA
Following breakfast and check-out procedures, we set off toward Casablanca Airport for our return flight to Istanbul. Along the way, our guests who wish may join our optional Casablanca and Rabat Tour (80 Euros). On our tour, we first depart for a city tour of Casablanca. Although it is not the capital today, Casablanca is Morocco’s most populous city and is also the center of the economy. Today, Casablanca has one of the world’s largest artificial harbors. In the 12th century, it was a small Berber village called Anfa; in the 15th century, it became a Portuguese settlement and was named “Casa Blanca,” meaning “White House” in Portuguese. The city was evacuated after the great earthquake of 1755, re-established in the 18th century by Sultan Sidi Muhammad Ibn Abdallah, occupied by the French in 1907, and regained its independence in 1956. During our panoramic city tour of Casablanca, which has hosted many civilizations and therefore possesses a very rich architectural heritage, the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world with a capacity of 100,000 people (entrance fee 12 euros/free during prayer times), the Old City (Medina), United Nations Square, Rick’s Cafe, where the 1942 Hollywood film “The Casablanca” was filmed, Mohammed V Square and Corniche, where we will have the opportunity to photograph the Atlantic Ocean, will be among the main places to see. After the Casablanca tour, we depart for Rabat. Located on Morocco’s northwestern Atlantic coast along the Bouregreg River, Rabat has a rich historical heritage with its Arab-Muslim past and distinctive colonial architecture. It includes the new city, designed and built under the French protectorate from 1912 to the 1930s, reflecting the transition to Western modernity through royal and administrative areas, residential and commercial developments, and botanical and pleasure gardens (Jardins d’Essais). Across the Bouregreg River from Rabat, whose port is filled with traditional fishing boats, lies Sale, Rabat’s twin town, where Robinson Crusoe was enslaved before his final escape to Brazil. We organize a panoramic tour along Rabat’s palm-lined avenues, filled with monuments and statues dating back to the 12th century. During our tour, the Mohammed V Mausoleum (our guests who wish may visit it free of charge during free time, subject to availability), the Hassan Tower, a wonder of the medieval Moorish world with its great minaret left unfinished when its founder died in 1199 and built to be the tallest building in the world at that time, and the Royal Palace will be viewed panoramically. Following our panoramic city tour, we begin our Medina Markets Tour. We complete our tour of the Medina markets, established on Rue Souika, the main street of the old city center Medina, where we can enjoy shopping and bargaining by visiting colorful stalls selling various ornaments, shawls and clothing, as well as tasting local street delicacies. At the end of the tour, we continue our journey toward Casablanca Airport.
