Throughout history, Belgrade has been one of the most important cultural and strategic centers of the Balkans, and today it continues to stand out with its liveliness, vitality, and historical texture. In this part of our tour, we will visit the Bosniak martyrdom site where one of the largest massacres of the last century occurred during the Bosnian War, where thousands of Bosniaks were killed and buried in mass graves, marking the first documented genocide in Europe since World War II. Upon arriving in Sarajevo, which has been the cultural capital of the Balkans for centuries and is historically significant as the place where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated in 1914, triggering the outbreak of World War I, we will note that the city suffered significant destruction during the destructive wars among Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks in 1992, yet Sarajevo has managed to preserve much of its beauty.
