Amsterdam (Marken & Volendam - Zaanse Schans)
After breakfast, free time. Guests who wish may join the Marken & Volendam - Zaanse Schans tour (100 €), which will be arranged as an extra by our guide. While visiting Marken and Volendam, where we can best observe the traditional lifestyle of the Netherlands, the nature and the colorful houses lined up one after another will impress you greatly. Formerly a fishing village, Marken transformed after its residents became connected to the mainland by a bridge and the island became a tourist destination, with handicrafts and traditional clothing production becoming widespread. The houses built on stilts to prevent flooding are still under protection today. We will take a short drive over the bridge to Volendam, which is much larger than Marken. On the way, in an area with various cheese producers and a cheese tasting workshop, we will visit a cheese producer and learn about cheese production. After some free time for shopping, we will continue to Volendam. In this beautiful town, where famous artists such as Picasso and Renoir stayed briefly in the 20th century, you may see many locals walking around in traditional clothing. As we tour this town, where fishing still continues in part, you will see historic fishermen’s houses, museums, handicraft workshops, and shops. We will have time for lunch in Volendam, which is known for its traditional dishes. After visiting these two lovely villages, we continue our tour to Zaanse Schans Theme Park, where we will spend half a day. Located in the town of Zaandam, this open-air museum was created to reflect the region’s rural life and industrial activities of the 18th and 19th centuries. Famous for its working windmills, the area reflects the past of the Netherlands with its wooden houses, workshops, and warehouses in traditional architectural style. After free time in this town, which also captivates visitors with its natural beauty, we return to Amsterdam. Following free time for dinner in the city and after meeting at the time determined by our guide, we head to our hotel for accommodation and free time to rest.
